Is Word Length Important for a Good Blog Post?

I recently read an article about blogging that said a good blog post should be at least 1000 words or more. If you want even higher SEO rankings then your posts should be 2000 to 3000 words. So is length really that important to a good blog post?

I never really thought about it until I read this article. Most of my blog posts never make it past 600 or 700 words. It was always my opinion that people don’t read anything thoroughly on the web, they scan things. I went to college for web design and media. It was there that I learned to write for the web. I create my paragraphs in small chunks to make it easier for people to scan my content. So a shorter blog post length is always better for that purpose.

Of course, everything changes over time. I did some research on the topic and the results that I found suggest that shorter may not be better. I came across a website called which most of you probably already know about. The products that they offer are pretty expensive, way out of my price range. But they have a section on their website where you can do free research. You can find that here: It is where I found some of my information for this post. You should check it out because you can find some interesting stuff there.

There are a lot of factors that play into how well your posts perform for you. It also depends on your topic and how you write them. There is a type of post called a compounding post. These are usually longer, instructional blog posts that appeal to a very broad audience. They contain words like “how” and “why” in their title.  This type of blog post basically helps people with a problem they are having, just like a “how-to” book does. The broader the appeal the better they perform. In fact, these types of broad compounding posts outperform the narrowly focused niche related ones.

I think posting frequency and good old fashioned quality content plays into this too. Everybody knows that Google loves to see fresh quality content on a website or blog. It takes time to craft a good blog post. So craft your posts well. As long as you are creating informative quality content for your website you should be good.

I still believe that a 2000 to 3000 word blog post is a bit much. It is a fast-paced world that we live in now. A 140 character universe, so to speak! That many words seem like an awfully big commitment. I think it is the message that you are trying to convey and the quality of the content that you are using to communicate it that matters more.

It would be very time consuming to write a 3000 word informational blog post every time you create one. This would be especially true for someone that is running their own business. Sometimes you just don’t have that kind of time. But when you are updating your website, consider sprinkling in some of these compounding blog posts to up your SEO rankings. It will help you attain the long term visitors that every blogger is looking for.
